Inner leadership is about leading yourself successfully in every situation. In today's ever-evolving work and business landscape, good self-leadership skills give a huge competitive advantage. People who possess efficient intrapersonal skills can navigate human relations successfully and take more personal initiative.
The term inner distinguishes different intrapersonal functions from the functions of the physical body. The word inner is here wider than the term mind, which is about mental and emotional levels only. Inner leadership focuses on improving all intrapersonal strengths, not just leading thoughts, imagination and emotions.
You aren't your body-mind. Both your physical body and processes within your mind need leading.
True inner leadership skills are awareness-based inner skills.
Leading from within is based on the ability to use awareness actively. This is a step away from mindfulness practices that use awareness only for passive self-observation.
The active use of awareness allows one to lead different processes in the mind, like imagination, thinking and emotions at will. Awareness can also be used to direct more subtle levels, like sensing and awareness itself. The conscious leader here is your True Self (see the graph below).

Your True Self, the ability to sense something, and consciousness are all silent inner levels that are hard to spot when your mind is constantly engaged with subconscious inner reactivity. Only when you get off the habit-based autopilot mode can you spot your awareness and inner sensing and restore contact with your core.
Inner leadership is about moving from automatic thoughts, imaginations, and emotions that 'run you' to consciously using those levels as tools.
The problem is that reactive thoughts, imaginations, and emotions cover your real essence. In other words, your inner noise hides your silent True Self.
That is why most people are confused about who they are; they have lost contact with themselves and define their being by their thoughts, imaginations, emotions, and/or physical bodies. But in your core, you are none of those levels.
The True Self is free from thinking, emotions, and even the physical body, in common sense. True Self is impossible to describe with words, as it has nothing to do with your mental level, as it is an internally activated level outside of your core.
True Self can be experienced cognitively, and when done so, you can notice that this inner core is always completely free from problems. It has no identity on mental, emotional, or physical levels.
The true Self is a calm and silent observer with just 3 qualities:
- I am;
- I know that I am;
- I have a subtle primordial/omnipresent flow of blissful energy.
The dilemma is that the silent and invisible True Self is beyond usual descriptions (even the 3 qualities above are already words, not in the purest sense). It has no name or properties in the material format.
You either experience the True Self in your core or you have lost contact with it. Your True Self still exists; the problem is that you have lost contact with your core essence and covered it up with domains operating outside of it (see the graph on top of this page). This makes people confused as they identify with what they are not.
The inner leadership dilemma is that consciousness is also static and not visible. For inner leadership, we need to use consciousness actively as awareness. Awareness is like attention; it can be directed.
Leading from within is about empowering intrapersonal strengths
All inner leadership skills are personal and equip you with the mastery of leading different processes within your mind (thoughts, imagination and emotions).
As the human brain is neuroplastic, it can learn new conscious pathways instead of subconscious habitual paths.
Neuroplasticity is the human brain's ability to adapt in response to new experiences. This means that we can train our brains to learn new skills to use external tools (pen, phone, computer, or car) and inner tools (awareness, sensing, thinking, imagination, emotions), see the graph at the beginning of this page.
According to such a view, also our physical body is our tool, something we can lead at conscious will. We aren't biorobots, and by seeing us as bodies, we can't grasp the concept of inner leadership and depend on what happens to us. But you are not what happens to you. The strength to change it comes from learning intrapersonal skills.
Intrapersonal skills provide you with the power to access also awareness-based skills, like creativity, intuition, insights, distinguishing, noticing, etc.
