Prevent burnout in the workplace
Are you aware that employee burnout has an 86% to 92% overlap with depression?
Early burnout prevention starts with stress reduction and it removes the risk for depression and work-related mental health issues.
Stress originates from the lifestyle choices of successful professionals and leaders – when you work intensively you come in contact with work-related stress daily.
MHA’s third annual Work Health Survey stated that 85% of employees notice that their stress affects their mental health.
However that isn't all, 83% of employees stated that they felt emotionally drained from work and 99% of those employees feel that their workplace stress affects their mental health and wellbeing (see the graph below). Such influences include a drop in employee engagement and productivity.
Positive stress is the major pathway to burnout
Many scientific papers have proven that burnout isn’t the result of one single event, but rather a question of long-time exposure to stress. What most people are unaware of is the fact that positive stress is causing more burnout than negative stress.
Positive stress is a double-edged sword. It releases energy for you to float high on the tides of life, but can just as quickly turn against you. The most dangerous aspect of this is the fact that we are often unable to take time off because it feels like “everything is going so well”.
As we lack awareness-based intrapersonal skills, we just don't notice how our stress becomes chronic or how we due to that pass through different phases of burnout.
How big is the stress problem?
The Mental Health UK Burnout Report from 2024 stated that 95% of the working adults experienced high pressure or stress during the last year and 35% experienced high or extreme levels of pressure and stress always or often.
Burnout never happens overnight, it has at least five distinctive phases and it is easy to prevent burnout in the early stages.
How many employees are stressed and thus on the path to burnout?
Before the pandemic and lockdowns, in 2019 'Cigna 360 Well-being survey' was carried out in 23 countries and pointed out that 9 out of 10 employees say they’re stressed and their stress influences work results negatively.
After the pandemic situation is worse as the MHA graph and Mental Health UK graph that we presented earlier on this page demonstrated.
Almost everyone experiences some kind of stress. If it isn't work-related stress, it is financial stress or social stress from political uncertainty, or stress from health or family matters.
However, while stressors are around us and there is very little we can do about removing them wholly, we can change our own inner reactivity that causes stress.
Replacing your automatic inner reactivity with the aware response that allows keeping a fit and calm mind is the approach that delivers results. It is a sustainable approach that never fails.
If you start with stress reduction now you can improve employee engagement and nip the burnout problem in the bud.
The benefit of mental strength should be obvious, in modern workplaces, as almost everyone needs to use their heads for critical thinking, decision making and accessing creativity.
